Report from Day of Action against BNP 25th April

200 attended the latest UAF Day of Action in Barking & Dagenham.  Trade unionists, students, locals and other anti-fascists gave out tens of thousands of leaflets in four wards where the Nazi BNP are hoping to win the majority of councillors.  Canvassing response remains mainly positive – despite BNP activists out on the same day trying their best to stoke up divisions.

One UAF campaigner reported from the Gascoine ward, “We knocked on the door of an elderly woman pensioner.  She was hard of hearing and misunderstood us for being pro-BNP.  She was about to tell us where to go when her African neighbour stepped in and explained who we were.  Her parting words to us were, “Good on you, keep up the good work!””

Solid support for the UAF campaign was reported in many areas of the Parsloes ward even, as another campaigner told, “BNP activists had already visited the street we were canvassing that day, and we saw their leaflets stuffed through people’s letter boxes.  But the response when we knocked on the doors was incredible, lots of people telling us they would never vote for the Nazis.”

In Mayesbrook ward, residents we’re pleased to see UAF and some took piles of leaflets to give to their friends.

With less than two weeks to go til the elections, we need one last hard push in Barking & Dagenham.  Make sure to join us for the Day of Action on May 2nd.
